TR2N

I must admit, I've not been following the buzz from this year's Comic Con. I usually don't, not being much of a comic reader. The odd bit of cross-media promotion grabs my attention now and again, but by and large, Comic Cons pass me by.

But it's one of those cross-media promotions that grabbed my attention by the short-and-curlys this morning as I read the latest Sci-Fi Weekly news summary. At the end of a Disney panel promoting the next Dwayne Johnson film, Race to Witch Mountain, Disney came out with a "surprise presentation" - which turned out to be no less than a three minute test reel for the sequel to one of my favourite movies.

That's right: after years of speculation and months of rumours, Disney has just announced, in spectacular fashion, that it's working on Tron 2 - or, as the trailer would have it, TR2N. I watched a very dodgy bootleg of the video, complete with light cycles, refashioned identity discs and no less than Jeff Bridges himself.

It's rumoured to hit in 2011. I cannot wait.

The Host and Red Seas Under Red Skies

The first of my book reviews to appear on the Cairns.com.au website! The Verdict: Does without SF’s usual toys and doesn’t need them – a gripping, heart-wrenching read.

Actually, sorry, it's the second: the first is here! The Verdict: Less pacy but more characterful than the first (book in the sequence); a great sophomore work for (Scott) Lynch.

Bringing the Silly in D&D

I’ve been trying to find a post on Steve Darlington’s LiveJournal for the past ten minutes (this is one of the reasons why I don’t blog on LiveJournal; there’s no way to search someone’s archive). Some time ago, maybe a year, maybe three, he was posting about a D&D campaign he was in. He wrote something along the lines of the inherent silliness of the setting, and how he couldn’t help imagining cavalry charges straight up castle walls whenever he read the spiderwalk potion description.

In the meantime, I found a more recent post where he relates his reactions to D&D 4th Edition, which is just as relevant. Oh, sorry: The reason I’ve been ransacking Steve’s LJ is because I’ve been listening to the podcasted Actual Play recordings of Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade and Scott Kurtz of PvP playing Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition with Wizards of the Coast’s GMs. The recordings are pretty damn fun. All three of the players are witty, creative guys – which, as they’re behind two of the most popular webcomics out there, is no real surprise – and they attack the concepts of the session and the results of their rolls with gusto. Probably the most hilarious moments come from Mike Krahulik, who has never played a tabletop RPG before, and his character Jim Darkmagic, to whom he always refers in the third person – “Jim thinks you guys are pretty fuckin’ lucky to have Jim”, “Jim casts Jim’s Magic Missile”, “Jim goes to the bathroom and deals 5 damage.” It seems like an example of the kind of silly that Steve was advocating.

Joss is the Boss

In case you didn't already know - and I didn't, I only just found out about this today via the SCIFI Channel - Joss Whedon (yes, him) is experimenting a little with alternate modes of broadcasting after the writer's strike. His effort, starring Neil Patrick Harris (yes, him) and Nathan Fillion (yes, him too), will be webcast for but a few days from July 15th to 19th.

It's called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

Standing Up for My Tastes in RPGs

I believe every set of rules is intended to support a particular flavour of awesome, even though it mightn’t necessarily succeed. D&D supports a different kind of awesome than Dogs in the Vineyard. Feng Shui is pretty clear on its awesome, though. Its awesome comes about in the fight scenes, when the players are firing off each other and the GM to create memorable, fast-paced, stunt-laden action. It virtually requires players to be not only primed to fire when the fights roll around, but also be economical with between-fight scenes. In order to keep the snap of the session going, each scene that occurs between fights must either tie directly into one or more PCs’ melodramatic hooks or feature some really cool interplay (a’la the Vince & Jules “Big Macs in France” scene at the start of Pulp Fiction); otherwise, they should be excised swiftly and cleanly.

My Three Blogs

Since I got involved with the PMS Clan, I’ve been thinking about my web presence again; I’ve started getting a bit more active in various places and before Vickie hides my PC’s power cord because I’m spending too much time with it, I’d like to put some thought around my various web-presences and organise my various efforts.

So what are these web presences?

The very blog you're reading now. I call this web log my notepad and idea-journal, so it’s home to my thinkings, rants and the rare bout of fiction.

The Grin With Legs, my MySpace. I originally intended it as my “social calendar” blog, but after indoor soccer finished I pretty much left it alone. When I started courting the local divisions of the PMS / H2O Clan, I discovered that the clans and their members had MySpaces, so I started sending Friend requests, andmy blogging over there.

The PMS / H2O Clan blog. When the PMS Clan implemented its site redesign this week, one of the new features they added was member blogs, and I’d like to set one up for myself.

Good Things Come...

In the midst of rising interest rates, skyrocketing petrol prices and gross grocery bills, it’s nice when live gives you something to smile about. For starters, publishers have glutted the office with comp copies of new novels, so I’ve been helping out by reading and reviewing some of them. Through this I’ve been introduced to the brilliant work of Scott Lynch; I’ve read both of his novels (so far) in the Gentleman Bastard Sequence, which is fantasy like I’ve never read it – street level, with a Tarantino-esque flair. Not even Fritz Leiber’s Lankhmar stories have as much wit as The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies. Okay, maybe I’m slanging off a master just to get attention, but I really do prefer Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen to Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser.

Forsaking the Forsaken for Water

Well, in a bit of an about face from my last big clan-related posting, I decided to quit The Forsaken Ones after all. Karlos got in touch on Saturday; he’d decided to quit the clan for his own reasons. As that meant our ladder team was down to four people, two of whom I couldn’t communicate with due to network conflicts, I decided to pull out as well.

I figured I’d go clanless for a little while – until I started playing some games with a few folks on my XBL Friends list. I’d been keeping an eye on the development of their clan for a little while, and they were friendly, communicated well and didn’t swear – probably because a good portion of them were female.
